So this pretty much solves my problem now that I figured out what transcoding means lol. I found a setting on the TV to choose for maximum quality, and now it's direct-playing the 4k videos just fine so it doesn't have to convert (or transcode). I then realized transcoding is when the original file is, in this example, 4K, and the client (my TV/web browser) was requesting to watch the file in 1080p, so it had to convert from 4k to 1080p in realtime to play. I ended up missing a key bit of information: what is transcoding? Ive tried all I can think of, tried to read the official Plex forums, here, and Chromecast forums. The server itself reflects this also - the resource utilization for both the CPU and GPU are tied to the stuttering/buffering. What can I do to achieve good 4K (Up to 80mbps) transcoding? Will I have to make a standalone plex server? The 'Throttled' part is new, as before, it was just transcoding. When I bumped up the VM to 16 cores, ESXi's host CPU utilization was 90-95% meanwhile on the VM htop reported plex transcoder using up to ~1100% and average load was ~13.00 for a 1 minute average All movies and TV shows are located on a NFS share on FreeNAS, I also set the transcoder directory to /transcoder/ on the Plex VM just in case it was using the NAS, network speed is full gigabit. Watching anything 1080p, transcode speed is between ~5 and 100+. Bumped up to 16 cores and 4GB of ram with no improvement. Plex is running in a VM, started off with 4 cores and 4GB ram. Link to logs (optional but recommended): What are your (relevant) settings? Transcoder Quality: Prefer higher speed encoding Currently showing transcoder progress at 97, and it just stopped. They are only 44 into watching it, but the transcoder just keeps going using constant 100 CPU despite being way ahead. I am currently watching a remote transcoded stream running on my server that is not throttling when it should be. What you expected? Good playback, transcode speed 1.3 or higher Transcode isnt dropping to throttled status. What happened? Buffers every few seconds, transcode speed between 0.0 and 0.6 Have you checked the Plex knowledge base and searched on the sub and Google: YesĬlients, w/ versions, if applicable: Chrome web browser, Android TV, iPhone Please go to the relevant subreddits and support forums, for example: Build help and build shares posts go in their respective megathreads No referral / affiliate links, personal voting / campaigning / funding, or selling posts Welcome to /r/Plex, a subreddit dedicated to Plex, the media server/client solution for enjoying your media!
